Mere Christianity BK 3 Ch 3 (Notes & Thoughts)

Book 3
Chapter 3

"Everyone is to work with his own hands, and what is more, everyones work is to produce something good..."

One thing that everyone must be aware of is that Christ did not come to preach a brand new morality. Yes, he did bring new teachings that challenged the Jewish law, but it all connects to the same ideas that God had in place at the beginning of time. Only crazy people present 'new morals'. We need to go back to the basic and simple principles.

"People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed."- Dr. Johnson

The Bible doesn't say to only treat a certain kind of person well, or a certain society. The Bible doesn't advocate a political party, but it gives us morals. We must give everyone the same amount of love and charity no matter their beliefs. A lot of people search the Bible hoping to find support in their political beliefs.

"We are looking for an ally where we are offered either a Master or--a Judge."

A lot of people say that society would be better if the Church took over a lot of it. But when they say that they mean the pastor, or bishop or priest. The Church is not one man, the Church is not a building, it is a group of people. The Church is the body of Christ. In order for a whole society to change, each individual Christian needs to change their own life. If you want to change the world, look in the mirror.

"By the Church they ought to mean the whole body of practicing Christians."

The Church is called to work with their hands. A Christian society is not lazy or public. A Christian society requires obedience and respect.

"Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before." 1 Thessalonians 4:11

Not only to God, but to one another. Children to parents and wives to husbands. In order to love your neighour, you must love God, and in order to love God, you must obey Him.

"Obedience is God's love language." -Riley Kehoe

A mistake that a lot of people make is picking and choosing from the Bible. All of us think that we can choose what we like from Christianity and add our own ideas. But the thing is, you can't change the truth. You can't add or take away from God's word.

"Each one of us would like some bits of it, but I am afraid very few of us would like the whole thing."

Another important aspect of a Christian society is Charity. The Bible repeatedly talks about giving to the poor. But some people will say, "Why give to the poor, when we can aim to make a society that doesn't have any poor people?" That is true, but making a society without poor people doesn't mean you can stop giving to them.

"But if anyone thinks that, as a consequence, you can stop giving in the meantime, then he has parted company with all Christian morality."
