Mere Christianity BK 2 CH 4 (Notes & Thoughts)
Book 2
Chapter 4
"He could surrender His will, and suffer and die, because He was man; and He could do it perfectly because He was God."
The center of all of Christianity is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But what does Jesus's death mean for our lives? A lot of people can have different ideas or beliefs, but there is only one truth. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. We sinned and therefore are condemned to eternal death. But Jesus became the sacrifice for us, he defeated death so that we can live forever.
"He disabled death itself."
This is such a powerful act and it is the formula of Christianity. We dug a pit for ourselves and got stuck in it. In order for Jesus's work on the cross to apply to our life, we must surrender. We must allow Jesus to help us out of our own pit. We must repent of our sins and accept Him. There has to be participation and work on both sides. And all of this is in the name of love.
"That is the sense in which He pays our debt, and suffers for us what He Himself need not suffer at all."
Jesus didn't need to suffer and die for us. He's God! He could have just left the world alone, but the love He has for us is unimaginable.
