Fawkes, by Nadine Brandes (BOOK REVIEW)
" 'You've had one moment of clarity and now you think you have all the answers,' She gave a grim smile, 'Take a breath, Thomas. There has always been fear. There will always be fear. It's up to us to stand tall, even when fear demands we bow to it.' "
Thomas Fawkes never wanted to turn to stone. The Stone Plague was uncontrollable, caused by the Igniters. At least that's what he was told....
It has reached the day that Thomas will receive his mask and be assigned a color power. But when Thomas' father doesn't show up with his mask, Thomas becomes confused. He hopes that once he gets his mask, he will be able to cure the Stone Plague that is spreading on him.
Determined to get a mask, Thomas goes to London in search of his father, the great Guy Fawkes. When Thomas finds his father, he becomes even more confused. His father declines making him a mask, but gives him another opportunity that may heal Thomas' Stone Plague. Thomas comes to find out that his father is a part of a plot to kill the king of England. The Keepers believe that assassinating the Igniter king will cure the Stone Plague. Keepers and Igniters have been at odds over the danger of the White Light, and this plot may be the only way to stop it all of the fighting. But as Thomas gets to know a woman named Emma he questions whether the White Light is really dangerous and if the Igniters are really causing the Stone Plague.
Fawkes, by Nadine Brandes was a roller-coaster! I really enjoyed this book and I loved all of the turns in the plot. I did like how the book was written from Thomas' perspective. Seeing all of his thoughts and experiencing all of his emotions makes the book more intimate and interactive. When I first began reading it, I was a little confused by the whole 'Color Power' thing, but as I kept reading, the book did not fail to explain a lot of things, in its own way. I loved how unique the story was. I have never read anything like it. A lot of books remind me of others that I have read, but this one was a whole new idea and plot. This was also a romance, so that was also a highlight! It was a really sweet aspect of the story and I really enjoy watching two people fall in love :)
I really loved Nadine Brandes writing, it did remind me of Suzanne Collins and Lois Lowry's style. I love those authors so I did like Nadine Brandes. The style of writing and the plot did have a bit of a Frank Peretti theme to it as well.
I give this book a 9 out 10 and recommend it for ages 13+
