An Old-Fashioned Girl, by Louisa May Alcott (BOOK REVIEW)
"We can't any of us do all we would like, but we can do our best for every case that comes to us, and that helps amazingly."
Polly Milton never questions her clothes or simply the way she is, until she goes to visit her friends, the Shaw's, in the city. Her friend, Fanny always looks too glamorous for her age and Polly doesn't seem to fit in. But Polly finds a friend in silly old Tom and soon gets along with Fanny.
Time passes and Polly grows up. She becomes a music teacher in the city and visits her friends once again. When Polly returns she becomes shocked with the news that Tom is engaged. Over time she had grown to love Tom. Will Polly ever find love?
'An Old Fashioned Girl' by Louis May Alcott was such a good book. It's by the same author of Little Women and definitely reflects that same style. I love L.M. Alcott's handwriting and couldn't put this book down. I liked how different the story line is from other books and appreciated the plot. Polly was such an interesting character unlike any other and I enjoyed seeing the effect she had on other people. One of the most fascinating aspects of "An Old-Fashioned Girl" is how it digs into the differences between social classes. Polly comes from a humble background, where she learns the importance of hard work and genuine relationships. On the flip side, you have Fanny Shaw, who lives in luxury but is often out of touch with what truly matters in life. Their contrasting lifestyles make for an engaging story full of intriguing situations.
Through Polly's visits to the Shaw family, we see how the glitz and glamour of wealth can sometimes hide deeper issues. While Fanny is caught up in the latest fashion trends and social standing, Polly's simple and kind-hearted approach challenges her friends to rethink what it really means to live well. Polly's presence in the Shaw household acts like a breath of fresh air, leading them to warm up to each other and rediscover the true pleasure of friendship.
I give this book a 9 out of 10 and recommend it for ages 12+
