Less of me and more of Him
"He must increase but I must decrease." John 3:30
So much of this world's current culture and belief is focused on loving yourself more. The spread of selfishness is in the costume of self-love and we as Christians must guard our hearts from becoming self centered. I love how John 3:30 words it, we must decrease ourselves! Humility must come into play here. C.S. Lewis puts it this way,
"True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less." -C.S. Lewis
When we lower ourselves, the Bible says that God will lift us up. When we die to ourselves, God will give us life. God constantly flips the ideas of this world.
"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." -James 4:10
The truth is we need God, desperately. We can't get to heaven any other way but through Jesus. We aren't enough, only Jesus is enough. Jesus lived a perfect life, died and came back to life because we simply can't do that. We aren't enough, we are sinful.
"For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." -Luke 14:11
We must think not only less about ourselves, but think more of others. The Bible talks a lot about charity and preferring others, even with our lives. When we drown ourselves in selfishness, we will be blinded from seeing what others need.
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourselves not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others." Philippians 2:3-4
