The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins (Book Review)

"Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor...."

24 tributes and only one gets to live.....
In the shambles of a place once known as North America lies the country of Panem. Panem is made up of one shining Capitol and 12 districts surrounding. The Capitol is tyrannical, cruel and keeps all of the districts in constant fear by requiring them to send one male and one female above the age of 12 to the Capitol to fight the other districts tributes to the death on live TV. Everyone in the Capitol finds the games entertaining. The reason for the games? There had once been a rebellion and the Capitol uses the games as a reminder to never rebel against the government again. When 16 year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers for the Hunger Games in place of her sister, she considers it as a death sentence. But she can hunt. She does it every week. This is different though, these are real people. The male tribute for 12 is Peeta Mellark, the boy who gave her bread when she was starving. Haymitch, a previous Hunger Games victor, is Katniss and Peeta's mentor. Under Haymitch's guidance Katniss and Peeta act out a fake romance, but does Peeta truly love her? Katniss must make decisions that weigh her own survival over morality, and even love over her own life.

"Remember, we're madly in love, so it's all right to kiss me anytime you feel like it."

I wish I could scream from the rooftops..."This book is AMAZING!!" Maybe I will....The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a masterful work. It incorporates the themes of survival and sacrifice, creating a story that resonates on multiple levels. Through Katniss Everdeen's experiences, I could experience the harsh realities of a dystopian world while connecting with the characters. This book was utterly amazing through and through. I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. It was just so thrilling and unique. And let's not forget, the romance...ahhhh!! I love it! Peeta and Katniss are just so cute!! It's amazing how Collin's can tie in sorrow, pain, romance, adventure and action into a single book. I liked how it was from Katniss's perspective as well, that made it even more cool to see the thoughts going through her head and to understand her character. Suzanne Collins is such an amazing author and she has the amazing talent of drawing you into the kind of world that she displays. The magnitude that every single page held was astonishing. Collins invites us to really think about how much impact our choices can have and what the result of what a world with no God could look like. Although this isn't a Christian book there is so much to un-pack. I wonder how different this book would be if there was a God. If there was some kind of hope for the characters, some kind of peace. With God in our lives, everything changes. This book does not leave you without placing thoughts into your head and for a while I couldn't stop thinking about it.

"You don't forget the face of the person who was your last hope."

I give this book a 10 out of 10 and recommend it for ages 14+
