Mere Christianity Chapter 1 & 2 (NOTES AND THOUGHTS)
CHAPTER 1
Everyone has heard quarrels, “You took my seat,” or “You are wearing my shoes.” The thing about quarreling is that the people in the argument have to have some sort of agreement on what is right and wrong. There has to be a basic agreement that there is a certain standard of good that someone didn’t meet.
You can’t play football without both teams agreeing on the same rules. There has always been such a thing known as natural law. Murder is never looked upon as good, neither is stealing or selfishness. How is it that most people have this agreement?
CHAPTER 2
Some people think that moral good is an instinct. Yes, sometimes you just know that it’s good to help the old man with his groceries or helping someone with dinner. But there is also a second instinct. If a man is drowning do you go and help him or do you walk away so that you don’t get hurt or drown yourself? This is the instinct telling you to just take care of yourself. But your moral belief will decide whether to help or not. Your moral nature will decide between these two instincts.
There is an idea that there is such a thing as Nazi morality and Christian morality.
So people will say that maybe the Nazi's thought that what they were doing was right based on their morality.
But we must accept that there is an ultimate truth. Without an agreement of truth that you can’t change, the world is going to flip (and has started already) the idea of what is morally right and wrong.
