Winter, by Marissa Meyer (BOOK REVIEW)

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.
Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won't approve of her feelings for her childhood friend―the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn't as weak as Levana believes her to be and she's been undermining her stepmother's wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that's been raging for far too long. Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

“Thorne scoffed. “Careful is my middle name. Right after Suave and Daring.”

And we have wrapped up an amazing series. I really loved all of the books in this series and although there were a few things I would've changed about this book, it was a sufficient ending. Nothing about the overall plot in this book, "blew me away". I feel like it was interesting enough, that I was invested but nothing about it really struck me as amazing. The best part of this series, was the characters. They were so good. Meyer did an amazing job with their personalities and distinctions. They didn't feel distant at all. So yes, the character development was definitely strong, but I feel like the world building could've been a lot better.
I'll say it again and again, reading Marissa Meyer's writing, is like watching a movie. Every scene is so immersive and clear. Save for one scene at the end of this book; that was the one time I was confused as to what was going on.
The romance was so good *squeals*. Oh my lawrdy. I was giggling out loud at some of the parts. It was so sweet! I loved the dynamic of like, a friend group made up of a bunch of couples. It's so cute and humorous; especially when they're altogether.
Obviously, if you get annoyed at things being unrealistic, don't read this series. It's sci-fi, so a lot of the systems are very cringe. I'm such a mood reader, so it works for me when I want to read about perfectly unrealistic circumstances and romance and....you get the point.
Can I just dedicate these last few sentences to Captain Carswell Thorne? I mean, wow. Marissa Meyer, you have created the perfect man. Thank you. His banter with the other characters, his charm and dreamy eyes. *clears throat* I'm just embarrassing myself at this point. If you haven't caught on, yes. I really like Thorne. And, no. He is not a real person. Ok, well now that we got that all cleared up, let's move on.
The main character in this book, (take a wild guess at her name...) Winter, wasn't my favorite. I didn't really connect with her as much as I did with the other characters. I'm thinking it might be because she was only in this book. She was moderate and it made sense to add her to the plot.
I have a love-hate relationship with changing pov's. Marissa Meyer is on the love spectrum. She executes it so well. I have no beef with that aspect of this series. Good on you, Meyer.
"Would I recommend this series." Yes. 100%. It's clean, entertaining and just so much fun. Obviously, there isn't really any moral value at all to the series, but it's hard to find clean and trendy fiction nowadays.

“Leave it to Winter to make a bunch of sadistic, hot-headed predators get all swoony over her.”

I give this book and 8 out of 10 and recommend it to ages 13+

  1. I agree! What a good wrap up to the series. While Thorne was good, no one’s beating Wolf for me. Nice review!
